Win $250 From American Express!

Holiday shopping is never easy and it’s even more challenging when you’re on a budget.  I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve wandered aimlessly through the malls with no clue what to buy and so frustrated that I pick something out of my budget just so I don’t walk out empty handed. But I’ve learned from my mistakes and so can you!  Try some of my personal tips below for staying within a holiday budget and getting the most out of your dollar this season. Best of all, American Express is offering one lucky fashiongrail fan a $250 gift card by simply sharing your personal budget shopping tip!

  • Make a detailed list and start with the most difficult person to shop for first.  I know they say, “get the easy ones out of the way first,” but who wants to run around on Christmas Eve looking for that one item you can’t find?  Not me!
  • Check online sales before hitting the stores.  Tons of stores have online specials where you can pick up items in store and most places are posting deals as early as the day before Thanksgiving.
  • If you’re waiting for Black Friday then plan on getting there early!  Lots of stores are on a first come first served basis and utilize tickets.
  • Don’t be afraid to wait for Cyber Monday. Free shipping is what it’s all about!
  • Bring your phone and sign up for your favorite store’s feed to get instant deals and coupons (some stores let you utilize a barcode right from your phone).
  • If you plan on using credit cards, choose wisely.  Companies like American Express are doing a great job educating consumers about the benefits of smart shopping this holiday season to include leveraging card protection and the benefits of Membership Rewards (gotta love them points!).
  • Crunched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. Besides the convenience and traditionally great service that small, local businesses offer, American Express is offering its cardholders a one-time credit of $25 if they register an eligible card and make a purchase of at least $25 at a small business.
  • Suggest a gift swapping/ Secret Santa scenario instead of buying a gift for every single person you know. Try a holiday fun brunch with wine and appetizers during gift swap. Get creative and turn it into a yearly tradition.

The best tip I can give someone to not spent their entire life savings during the holidays is simple: set a budget and a wishlist! My immediate family and I are going this route. We have set a $40 max budget per gift and will use Amazon to create wishlists. That way we can give ideas, especially helpful for those hard to buy folks.

  8. My personal shopping budget list goes as followed:

If I REALLY want ONE item more than the others, I will buy it no matter the cost. However the other items, I wait until I find a better deal or I think, “How bad do I really want this?” If I have to think about it for even a split second and debate, it means my heart isnt into it…Now if it for others, I usually just give IMPORTANT PEOPLE gifts, hence my immediate family (parents and brothers) Even then its a PERSONAL gift. Something I think they like and they will look at and say, “My daughter got me this” or “My sister got me this”… Everyone else gets a warm big hug because the holidays for me are about love and time!

I have a price book so I know where the bottom line is when it comes to something we need/buy. Learn store policy regarding price match, return and else, either online or in-store. Always search for the best price and coupon codes for online shopping, plus go through cash back sites (esp. during holidays, most sites double cash back!) to maximize saving.

To start with budgeting I always set a limit for each person I am buying gifts for. Then i go online and search forums on savings/coupon sites and I compare prices. I find the best price or deal for the item I want and finally before I purchase I either go to mypoints or ebates to earn cash back/gift cards.

I set up an ING Direct checking account to save for Xmas in the summer. That way, by the time Xmas came around I have plenty of money for gifts etc. I’m going to keep it active and use it for those amazing items that I never buy because $200 is a lot of money to spend at once, even for a new winter coat. That way I can feel like I’m splurging occasionally without creating debt!

Make a list, stick to a cash budget and do some research before you buy. I find that when I use cash i reduce the impulse to overspend on credit cards. Prioritize the list. Seek those free combo gifts for less important people on your list. (For example, spend $21.50 at Clinique and get a free travel case with makeup). Use simple accessories and a pretty gift box. Some stores offer combo deals (like Charlotte Russe 3 for $10 deals on accessories). The key is to get something everyone would like and not be in ridiculous debt come January!

  22. Michelle says:

I ask for lists from everyone and also set up a christmas club at my bank.

One of the biggest things that has helped me stay within my budget is to use cash not credit cards. This will force me to stay within my budget. Using credit cards causes or tempts you to overspend. I also make a list and stick to it along with using coupons and shopping sales.
