How To Choose The Perfect Trench Coat For Men

The basis of the trench coat is always the same, no matter the interpretation and personal twist the different designers might give it, but finding the right one for you is not as easy as you may think.

It’s all a matter of finding the right colour, the right length and the right fit for you, but once you do find it you will have a timeless piece to use and re-use endless times over the years.

Here is my advice on what to look for in the perfect trench coat and make sure it truly is the right one for you!

Choose the fabric carefully

Gabardine: this is the original fabric used for the trench coat and it is waterproof, lightweight and durable. It has everything that you would want from this garment! I believe this is the best material, not only for practicality, but also because it looks great.

Leather: if you are a fan of the dramatic flare, then there are always leather trench coats for you. They are not my favourites as they are very heavy and I don’t think they look terribly good on men, so I would stay far away from them if I were you!

New fabrics: many designers are now trying out new fabrics for their trench coats like event fabrics and gore text which are great for staying dry. They also look quite good and definitely constitute a good alternative to the classic gabardine.

It’s All About The Color

Neutral colour: the classic colours for the trench coat are khaki and beige. These neutral hues are the most versatile and, in my opinion, also the sexiest ones on a guy. The only downside is that being that light they get dirty really easily. (Image on the left via mensclothing.alphaconsumers.com)

Blue: navy blue is another classic colour for trench coats and it has the extra perk of being more practical and difficult to get dirty.

Different colours: of course you can find trench coats in any colour, from burgundy to silver, which make much more of a statement and are for sure different from the others. Anyhow, if it’s your first trench coat, I would  go more for a classic colour and then, once you have your great timeless piece, you can think about having fun and check out other possibilities.

Talking about fit and length…

Classic trench: a classic, timeless trench is double-breasted, it has a belt, cuff straps and pockets. The length is just above the knees and it has that retro flare that makes it so iconic. It is certainly a style that will never fade and you will be able to wear it for years and years to come.

Cropped trench: trenches today are going shorter and shorter and the trend right now is for them to sit just below the waist. If you want to go for something that is more on trend right now, you can go for a cropped trench coat. It’s also the ideal solution if you are a bit on the shorter side! New trench: if you want to break away completely from tradition, there are lots of new trench models that do just that. No belts, single-breasted, zipper closure instead of buttons. One could argue that if you take away all these things it’s not a trench coat anymore, but I think it’s still a great modern and fresh alternative to it.

At stores like Debenhams and Boden they have a great selection of trench coats for men for really reasonable prices. Plus, you can find amazing deals on websites like My Voucher Codes that make them even more convenient.

What’s spring without a trench?  While most people have a trench hanging in there closet, it’s usually beige, black or white.  But this season is all about going bold!  Consider trying a fun and bright trench that will really stand out in the crowd. Tip:  go light when buying a trench that way you can get tons of wear out of it by styling it more as a blazer.

Orange Trench Coat – $60

This bright orange trench would look perfect over stripes or florals.

Sky Blue Trench Coat – $155

A baby blue trench screams spring and would sweeten a pair of leather leggings.

Double Breasted Trench Coat – $122

Try a yellow double breasted trench like Olivia Palermo and Zoe Saldana.

Faux Leather Panel Trench Coat – $65

This trench isn’t exactly bright but it’s got  so much style it doesnt need it!  Pair it with a white tank and boyfriend jeans and you’re good to go!
