Never Uncomfortable With Sanuk

I’m a born and raised Brooklyn girl that rarely left the city except for the occasional trip to Coney Island during the summer. One of the things I most regretted about being a city girl was not learning how to swim, so when I moved to Florida the first thing I did with my boys was take swimming lessons with them. My boys LOVED the water and immediately took to it. I was terrified of course but determined not to let them see it. In many ways this is how I face all of my fears. Whenever I’m about to embark on something that makes me feel uncomfortable I always ask myself, “what advice would I give my boys if they were put in the same situation?”

I’d like to think this small contribution led to the daredevils my boys turned out to be today. And when I watch them tackle their fears and take on sports like windsurfing at the beach, I can sit back and breathe a huge sigh of relief. I know that they’re not afraid to try anything and although you’ll never find me on a surfboard anytime soon, I still jump head first into the water without fear!

Flip Flops for Him & Her

Flip flops are a summer staple and if you’re like me and live in FL then it’s a 365 day a year staple.  I’m ALWAYS on the lookout for a new pair for me and my boys.  My entire family is more often than not seen wearing flip flops and we have a ton of different styles to keep our options open.  Flip flops are meant to be easy, comfortable and, if you buy the right ones, stylish!  For the most part I love a pair of brown leather flip flops but believe it or not I often have a hard time finding just the right ones.  Much of the time the leather is too tough or the color is never quite what I want.  I wear brown because of the earthy vibe and Reef Sandals have an amazing selection of this type and more!  I love the little details they put into them (check out the adorable crotchet pair below) and the soles are thick and comfy making them durable which means I can wear them to death!

My boys, on the other hand, have two requirements when it comes to their flip flops: comfort and durability.  They use their sandals hard from running around the beach, in the water and even playing basketball in them!  The Reef Fanning flip flops are absolutely perfect for this kind of wear and tear.  They’re not your typical flat flip flop… these babies have arch support with a molded eva footbed and a heel airbag.

Check out some of my favorite styles and what to wear them with below.

These crotchet pairs are adorable and perfect with anything from a maxi dress to rolled-up boyfriend jeans.

These are the perfect chocolate brown flip flops!  I love that they’re suede and look more expensive than $36.  Wear with all of your summer favorite dresses or shorts.

The Moonlight Palms sandals is stylish and comfy!  Pair with cut off shorts and a neon top for a fun look.

Men are typically practical and don’t need a ton of different looking shoes, so thankfully the fanning reefs have a ton of colors to choose from.  Boys can pair these with basketball shorts and a fitted white muscle tee or chinos and a striped top – you really can’t go wrong.

Glam Up Your Summer Basics

Summer outfits are for the most part laid back, casual and fuss free but that doesn’t mean you can’t inject a little glam into your look.  In fact it’s pretty easy to sass it up by simply adding a little glitter or metallics in the way of shoes, accessories or even a clutch.  Not only are the items below under $60, but Yeswalker still has its famous BOGO going on.  Check out some of my fave’s below and what to wear them with.

These Glitter T-Strap Wedge Sandals will definitely dress up your denim cut off shorts!  Pair your shorts with a white tee and you’re good to go!

Glitter T-Strap Wedges – $50 | Denim Shorts – $9 | Chase The Blues Necklace – $24 at meetmark.com | White Tee

Adding metallic flats will add a sassy touch to a classic stripe summer dress.

Striped Dress – $60 | Oversized Bangle – $39.95  | Metallic Flats – $48

My Celebrity Style Inspiration: Jessica Alba

May 3, 2012 by

When it comes to fashion inspiration, I’ve always been enamored with celebrities that “wear their hearts on their sleeves” and embody a style that both accentuates and complements their mood and personality (like Rachel Zoe, Rachel Bilson and Drew Barrymore). But when it comes to my personal day to day style, my hat goes off to actress, entrepreneur and mother of two Jessica Alba.  As a working mom, I truly admire the ease and simplicity of her wardrobe choices like tees, skinny jeans, blazers and scarfs.  Alba always looks stylish, comfortable and sexy (without over doing it) and effortlessly mixes colors and patterns without sacrificing her free spirit.

For my spin on Alba’s style, I bought a chambray dress at Forever 21 and paired it with a crochet cardigan from Marshall’s, and a studded belt from T.j. Maxx (I always manage to sneek something studded into my outfits) and brown strappy heels from meet mark.

Like Alba, comfort and ease have to be incorporated into a lot of my outfits…which is why I love affordable stores like TJ Maxx and Forever 21 (yes even moms can shop there!).

Speaking of style and comfort, We think its tremendous popularity is proof that the 2012 Corolla offers the ideal blend of comfort, value and safety. In it, you’ll find a surprising number of high-end features, like available Display Audio system. It offers remarkable performance and fuel efficiency, plus an impressive list of standard safety features. Factor in its legendary reliability, and it’s even more apparent that Corolla is the smart choice.

Guest post: Third Willow Clutch Build-an-Outfit

Carly of Chic Steals and winner of  our Third Willow Clutch contest has graciously allowed us to use her fabulous post on how she built her outfit around her new clutch!

I’ve been meaning to post this outfit for awhile; I won the beautiful Third Willow clutch last month in a contest sponsored by one of my fave fashion blogs, FashionGrail. (I am in love with their Celebrity Copycat feature, where every week they find a lookalike to a celeb’s outfit – the whole thing! So inspiring – and compelling me to shop!)

The clutch is made from turquoise denim with a cognac croco-embossed leather ruffle to it…I pair it with stuff so that it’s purposely mismatched, but for this outfit, I decided to build it around the clutch.

Picture 15

I’m going to a party for a friend of mine who just landed this big job she’s been after for awhile. Kudos to her, especially in this economy! Woohoo!

So the dress is a little too big for me on the top…I was going to make this silky vest to go over it from this scrap of tie-dyed raw silk I’ve had laying around for ages…5 years to be exact. When I made my wedding dress I dyed some of the silk a light robin’s egg blue to make a ruched bustier, and this particular scrap ended up a mottled turquoise… not the look I was going for. I kept it trying to figure out what to do with it, and then I thought to make a vest to go with the clutch, then realized I didn’t have enough to make a back in the style I wanted, so just stuffed it down the front of the dress to give me more up top and add visual interest. Very Pride & Prejudice of me, I suppose.

Picture 16

I’ve been dying for a crystal bullet necklace from Unearthen Jewelry for so long (gorge website btw), but at $360+ a necklace it was unattainable. And then I found AnotherFeather on Etsy and snapped up this fabulous speckled quartz bullet pendant for only $38. (The quartz has a bluish tint and little flecks in it…it’s out of this world.) Every penny well-spent!

Sorry for the hideous lighting – just trying something different – shooting inside since it’s about 1000 degrees outside here in Portland now. Trying out the wide angle lens. Methinks I should stay away from this since this was an extremely unflattering angle. Pucker filter, you are a godsend.

Pretty, pretty clutch. Thank you FashionGrail and Third Willow!

Celebrity Redo: Drew Barrymore

What is up with Drew’s closet lately?  Yes, she’s gorgeous and has great style, but it seems like her outfits have gone from cool and quirky to down right silly.  While this outfit isn’t terrible, it’s still a “off.”  The skinny jeans are overly rolled up and the shirt is totally shapeless.  I kept within her outfit’s “theme” but swapped out her button down for a more flattering scoop neckline that ties at the side.  I also kept her skinny jeans but threw in some fierce white platform sandals.  Hope you like it!  What do you think of Drew’s outfit?
