Hair Trend Alert: Ombre Color and Undone Hair
Midsummer hair is often the most neglected of the year. We’re sporting a sun-kissed glow and wearing our hair a bit looser, less done. It’s lovely how that vacation look just makes us all feel prettier. Plus, we’re all busy enjoying the sunshine every chance we get, so making it to the salon often falls to the bottom of our list.

Not to worry, beach bunnies. This year more than ever, the uncontrived look is in. You’ll notice runway up-styles are leaving a little fuzz around the hairline rather than, say, a sleek and glossy bun. We also saw braids on models in Alexander McQueen’s last show. But they aren’t just any braids; they look like warrior-ess braids that have been in battle and are all messed and tattered. It’s a relief, really. We can all just relax a bit. Messy tresses and grown-out color are all the rage for the moment.

You can get the look by leaving your layers just a bit longer than usual and asking your stylist to point-cut your ends instead of having a clean, blunt bottom. You can also go for melted highlights or ombre to get that grown-in look that just keeps sticking around. Try leaving your curls or waves a little less polished by going for a natural air-dry instead of using that curling iron to make perfect ringlets. Let’s all kick back for the moment and have some fun outdoors instead of spending time in front of the vanity mirror getting coiffed. Not to worry: Fall is just around the corner, and we’ll all be looking for a change of pace and, most likely, some very perfect-looking something or other. In the meantime, indulge in the uncontrived!

Summer Hair Trends to Try Now

Summer Hair Trends to Try Now

The ’70s are back, and they’re sticking around a little longer than we might have predicted. As always, hair follows fashion, and with the runways spinning out lots of boho chic and hippie-inspired looks, we’re seeing the summer hair scene mimicking the free-spirited decade.

From choppy bobs (Scarlett Johansson) to long, shaggy layers (Vanessa Hudgens) and even feather extensions, we’ll be enjoying the free-love look until next fall, at least. Johansson’s uncontrived cut is making its way to hair salons much to the delight of many top stylists. “It’s so great that our clients are asking for that instead of just another head of long layers. Thank you, Scarlett!” says Sura at Byu-ti Salon.

Even long hair has a new feel with shaggy layers instead of the same old blended ones. A standout example: Vanessa Hudgens’ sexy bohemian layers.

And can we talk about these feathers? Salons are scrambling to get these little buggers, and time is running out, as supply is very limited these days. But ask around or stop someone on the street and see where she got hers. This trend will likely turn out be a short-lived one, but for the moment, feather extensions are hotter than ever, and you can get them for under the $50 mark. As for maintenance and install, they take about five minutes to put in and you’ll have to get a touchup about every six weeks. Perfect, because you might even be over them by then.

To sum up the hair trends for summer 2011, keep it free-spirited and flowing. You might even want to stick a flower behind your ear if the impulse moves you. The retro free-loving ’70s are here just in time for enjoying concerts in the park, kicking back and maybe even taking a drive on the wild side.

My Favorite Hair Products

Love having long thick wavy hair, but it can be a bit overwhelming during the summer.  The last thing I want to do on a long hot day is blow dry my hair for 30 minutes and then straighten for another 15!  After years of buying every frizz free product out there I’ve finally tamed my mane with four products. Now if I straighten my hair it last for about 5 days and when I’m to lazy to blowdry and want beachy waves I air dry and still NO FRIZZ! Below are my fave products that I swear by:

Enjoy Sulfate Free Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner (I use this along with Enjoy’s conditioner once a week)

Hana Shine Shield Thermal Protectant

Biosilk Shine On Spray
