My Safety Pin Secret

I’m a curvy girl and I’ve grown to appreciate my angles over the years.  So when it comes to finding clothes that fit me I know which cuts and fabrics work for my shape. But every now and then I come across the perfect top, dress, skirt or even a blazer or dowdy cardigan that just won’t fit the way I want!   The solution to this dilemma is what I call my safety pin secret. I have them in ALL sizes imaginable and I use them to add ruching to just about anything that needs a little adjusting.  Ideally one large saftey pin does the trick, but for the most part two large safety pins on each side work best. Each pin should be pushed through 2-3 times (makes a huge difference!).

On dresses that don’t flow with my curves I gather the hem only at the sides and pin.  And since I LOVE the super flattering 3/4 sleeve, the same goes with just about any top and blazer (must be knit or thin).  It’s not always easy to get it right but when you do it’s a life saver!!

U by Kotex* products come in a variety of absorbencies and sizes, so you’re covered whether your flow is heavy or you just need backup protection.

Fabulous Plus Size Evening Dresses

Looking for an affordable, sexy evening dress can sometimes be a daunting task no matter what size you are especially one that can be worn more than once!  Well, Bonmarche Plus Size Clothing has a ton that will make you feel as good as you look with an extensive selection of contemporary apparel and accessories for women ranging from sizes 12-24.  What really caught my eye was Bonmache’s selection of sexy, sleek and classic dresses for the plus size woman.  Not only were they surprisingly affordable (leaving you plenty to snatch up a fab pair of shoes or accessories) but they truly flatter the curvy shape.  Bonmarché is UK’s largest value retailer selling affordable quality womenswear in a wide range of sizes (12-24). Ranges include casual and formal separates, outerwear, swimwear, lingerie nightwear and accessories, all designed with the real feminine figure in mind. In 2007, it launched a collection designed in collaboration with David Emanuel, the designer famous for the co-design of Lady Diana Spencer’s wedding dress in 1981. This collection has a slightly higher price point than the main Bonmarché range but still represents very good value for money.  Check out some of my fave’s below:

A Little Boho Goes A long Way

While the boho look is nothing new, it has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently with the help of some of today’s hottest celebrities (Nicole Richie, Drew Barrymore and Sienna Miller just to name a few).  Best of all, there’s no need to be a size 2 to get the boho vibe…something I know from personal experience!   Check out some of my tips on how to incoroporate a little boho into your Spring wardrobe with pieces from one of my favorite plus size fashion stores, Simply Be.

While the boho trend can be a tricky style to nail because it straddles the messy and overly sloppy look, the key is moderation.  There’s no need to wear it from head to toe (and for that matter there’s no need to wear any trend from head to toe). Below are a few tips:

A favorite way to add a little boho to your everyday look is a big, slouchy hobo bag There are a variety of hobo bags to choose from without breaking the bank.

Slouch Bag – $45

Scarves provide a simple and bold way to give an outfit that unstructured yet classy vibe.  There are a ton of lightweight scarves that are perfect for the warmer weather.

Scarf – $24

A maxi dress is an excellent and comfy option to get the boho look – particularly when paired with a blazer or leather jacket. The dress provides the boho part, and the jacket pulls it all together.

Maxi Dress – $73

Jewelry is the easiest and most fool proof way to add a little boho to your style.  Whether it’s long beaded chains, bangles or a pair of chandelier earrings you can’t go wrong.  Pair them with a white shirt to the office or with a tee during the day.

Bangles – $24

When it comes to shoes, the possibilities are endless.  A pair of slouchy boots, wedge heels, or braided sandals immediately come to mind.

Peep Toe Bootie – $57

So, whether your style is classic, modern, preppy or just straight up trendy, why not add a little boho to your look?
