Whenever the weather starts to get chilly and the holidays are right around the corner I always have the sudden urge to break out some plaid.

Plaid Button Down $14.99 at Marshall’s | White Skinny Maternity Jeans on sale for $24.99 at ASOS | Animal Print Heels $14.99 from Target (also seen here) | Watch c/o Timex | Phillip Lim for Target Tote | Studded Green Wallet $9.99 from Ross

For me a plaid scarf, button down, jacket or coat and even plaid accessories do the trick for me.  The idea is to get it right.  When incorporating plaid into any outfit, let it do all the work and keep your look unfussy. If you want to add a little more character to your plaid try some leather or animal print.  Below are some of my favorite pieces and what to wear them with.

A plaid blazer with leather sleeves is perfect for jeans and booties!  Wear with a chunky knit scarf or sweater for a cozy effect.

Summer plaids can be down right flirty and fun if worn with the right pieces.  The idea is to keep it fuss free and a little unconventional.  Pair your plaids with bright colors, bold accessories and ditch your traditional sandals for flat espadrilles or sneaks. I paired the adorable handkerchief hem skirt from Yesstyle.com with two different blazers.  One is a more nautical look and the other a trendier version.  Both looks can be worn for day or night and easily taken apart and worn many ways. Tip:  avoid tight fits – plaids are meant to be casual and easy to wear even if it’s a dress or skirt.

Handkerchief Hem Plaid Skirt – $88  | Two Tone Camisole – $40 | Smart Blazer – $90 | Leather Platforms  – $100 | Tote – $165

Handkerchief Hem Plaid Skirt – $88 | Cropped Blazer – $100 | Tee – $18 | Statement Necklace – $48 | Sam Edelman Allie Heels – $104 | Clutch – $155

I have an outfit in my closet that looks almost identical to this one and I wear it all the time!  It’s a great laid back look that straddles the sloppy side but the boots and accessories keep the look pulled together.  Get The “Hills” Stephanie Pratt’s look for less………….

My Five Top Fall Trends

Still shopping for Fall? Not me!  Check out some of my favorite Fall trends :

Full skirts
Flattering on most and perfect for day or night.  Wear them with  snug turtle necks, cardigans or a warm wool jacket on the cooler evenings.

Yes, that’s right I said  sandals!  Get some extra mileage out of them before storing for the Winter months.   Strappy sandals (or peep-toe pumps) look fabulously chic with dark tights.

The Dolman sleeve
Nothing will make you look more “unintentionally chic” like a dolman sleeve.  Wear it with skinny jeans or a pencil skirt.

Anything Plaid
It is the print of the Fall season and one of the most versatile.    Wear it with anything you own and instantly transform your look.  Try a plaid skirt with a fitted jacket.  Slide into your favorite jeans and throw on a plaid vest.  And for an easy yet snappy touch, just grab the durable plaid scraf.

I can’t even to begin to explain how obsessed I am with layering.  It’s such a simple yet fabulous way to add depth and character to ANYTHING!  The key to layering is keeping the look light and polished.  When layering,  always shoot for the lightest fabric possible.  For example, take your long lean tank tops normally only worn in the Summer (tank tops are perfect for adding depth because they peek out under neath the top layer)  and wear it under a light blouse, slip on a light v-neck sweater and then a fitted jacket.  I’m telling ya, it’s super easy and you’ll look AMAZINGLY put together.

Wide leg pants
You can’t go wrong with wide leg pants particularly when paired with a vest or a wrap shirt.  It will nip your waist and make your legs look long and lean.  Who doesn’t want that?
