How to Steal the Show With Your New Year’s Eve Dress This Year

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.45 PMCan you believe another year has almost drawn to a close? We might not have gotten through all 365 days just yet, but it’s never too early to start planning your New Year’s Eve dress. Many women have a tough time choosing what to wear for New Year’s, so here are our tips on how to be the belle of the ball:

  • Kill the holiday colors!

Showing up at a New Year’s party in holiday colors is the fashion equivalent of not taking your Christmas lights down till Easter. Christmas is over, so put your red and green back in the closet for next year—it’s time to turn over a new leaf! There are many colors that can work well for New Year’s Eve dresses, but we recommend going with either gold or silver. Dresses in these colors can be extremely eye-catching without being overwhelming and they go nicely with the optimistic vibe of a holiday dedicated to optimism, resolutions, and looking forward to the coming year. Alternatively you can even work some brighter spring colors into your ensemble, but do it in small doses—remember, we may be looking ahead but it will still be many months before flowers are blooming outside.

  • Sparkles and sequins.Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.34 PMAlso going hand in hand with the New Year’s spirit is anything that sparkles or glitters—and that means sequins are a YES for New Year’s Eve party dresses. As always with sequins, think carefully about how to gleam without blinding anyone: a red sequin dress, for example, is extremely showy whereas a silver or blue sequin dress, or a classic black sequin number, is a nice contrast of reserved and glittery. For brighter dresses, consider those that have sequin details but are not head-to-toe shimmer.

  • Have a ball.
  • Unlike pumpkins at Halloween, turkeys at Thanksgiving, or trees at Christmas, New Year’s Eve doesn’t exactly have its own trademarked symbol. But if there is one iconic image associated with New Year’s, it’s the dropping of the ball at Times Square, with all the excitement that final countdown entails. That means New Year’s is the perfect time to rustle up some spherical earrings. Just make sure they don’t look like Christmas tree ornaments—see also #1 above!

  • Relax.
  • Remember, New Year’s is the end of the holiday season and by now most people are nearly partied out. You can choose virtually any style dress that fits you well and enjoy your champagne in style; there is no strict theme you need to master for New Year’s Eve.

What are you going to wear when the ball drops this year?

3 Easy Ways To Make Your Casual Outfit Glam for New Year’s Eve

Tomorrow is  New Years Eve and I’ve got nothing planned and I’m totally excited about it!  Normally I’m out and about at some party but this year has been a bit hectic (in a good way) and I’m staying in. That of course will not change a thing when it comes to getting all dressed up. I plan on throwing on some bling, some red lipstick and some cute flats (I can’t fit into heels for more than 20 minutes).  Below ares some simple ideas for those of you ringing in the New Year from the comfort of your home or the home of your loved ones.

Sequins: Try anything with sequins but I love me a sequin top and jeans.  Tip:  For a little layering affect get a slouchy top and leave little black or white tank peeking out from underneath.

Sequin Top from Victoria Secret | Hollister Jeans | Tassle Flats from Modcloth | Tank

Go Monochromatic: Pick a color (I prefer black, white or gray) and wear it from head to toe.  Not only is it super easy to throw together but it also has a slimming effect AND a expensive feel.

Peplum Top | Gray Skinny Jeans | Booties | Necklace | Mac Lipstick

Add a Statement Necklace:  This is the easiest and fool proof way to dress up any outfit.  Wear your biggest boldest necklace over a turtleneck, with a button down or over simple white tee.  Tip: Look for necklaces with  mixture of bold and basic colors. This will give you more wiggle room when styling a casual outfit.

Multi Stone Necklace | Purple Frontal Necklace | Yellow Stone Bib Necklace

5 New Years Eve Dresses Under $50

I can’t believe the year is almost over!  Where did 2013 go?  I haven’t even decorated the house yet but I did get some shopping done (click here for some stylish gift ideas ) and I do have something to wear for New Year’s (Christmas is at home and I plan to proudly sport some comfy sweats and a ugly christmas sweater).  I always go all out on New Year’s and wear a pretty dress – it’s not often I get to do it so I take full advantage of it.  This year I can’t really take it to the max but I do love the dress I will be wearing. When I do go all out I try to stay away from the typical gaudy dresses that I see all over the place for New Year’s. I look for pieces that are fun, flirty and more importantly something I can wear more than once.  Below are some fabulous dresses all perfect for New Year’s for under $50.

Strapless Floral Mini – $36

Mesh Panel Bodycon Dress – $28

Lace Bodycon Dress – $30

Mini FLoral Dress – $44

Glitter Snake Print Dress – $45.50

3 Unconventional New Year’s Eve Outfits

For the most part New Year’s consists of something sparkly, short or sexy – all of which are just fine but this year why not try something a  little unconventional?  Below are 3 ideas for an outfit that’s not tight, short or even sparkly  – we can leave that all up to the jewelry!  🙂

Anyone can wear a mini but it takes someone with style to rock a chic floor length maxi!  Pair it with a cropped blazer for a dressy effortless feel, and metallic heels for sex appeal.

I love the idea of black and white for New Year’s, so why not try adding white heels to an all black pant suit or a sexy black off-the-shoulder sweater and leggings.

Stripes are a classic and totally unconventional for New Year’s and that’s what makes it cool!  Try a striped sweater dress with black opaque tights and red heels for a dressy yet still easy-to-wear look (and it’ll never go out of style!).

Get Grateful: Journals For The New Year

I’m not a big fan of the New Year resolution. Sure I love the concept of positive change but the pressure of the clock striking midnight is too much!  But I am a strong believer in gratitude, and that’s something that lasts all year long.  I’ve kept a diary all through high school and now as an adult I keep a gratitude journal. I even bought each of my boys a journal to jot down things they’re grateful for but motivating them to keep up with it is definitely a challenge!  I go through about four journals a year (sometimes more) and I’m always on the look out for cute one’s not only for myself but even to give as gifts to friends ( I always write a note in the journal letting them know how grateful I am that they’re in my life).  It doesn’t have to be an every day thing, even once a week is enough… and that’s a change (not a resolution) that I think is easy to start and keep.  Check out some of the most creative and adorable ones I’ve seen from Yesstyle.

New Year’s Eve Chic On The Cheap

With the holiday spending spree over, it’s not hard to wonder which is gonna drop faster: the New Year’s Eve ball or your credit score!  So if you’re like me and spent a ton on gifts, check out these three tricks to look a million at midnight and ring in the New Year on the cheap:

Sparkles and glitter are SO girly and festive.  You can incorporate it into your outfit with shoes, skirts or accessories.  Tip: buy an inexpensive solid colored skirt and lightly spray glitter all over it (see my skirt and spray selection below)

Skirt – $30 at Chicwish.com

Glitter Heels  – $50 at Zara.com

Glitter Spray (I’ve used on clothes and it washes out easily) – $3 at Walmart.com

Tank Top – $10 at Walmart.com

Go all out with hair and makeup.  If you normally wear your hair pin straight, pull out your curling iron and vice versa.  The idea is to go for a striking change; the same goes for makeup…if you’re a basic lipgloss/mascara girl, pullout your eyeliner and line up a cat eye with some false eye lashes.

Add a little red.  Sure, it’s a bit of a cliche color around the holidays.  But, it’s actually the “it” color this season (red demands attention and exudes sexiness).  Try a sexy red dress and simple red heels or throw on a scarf or lipstick.  Tip: if wearing red from head to toe tone it down elsewhere.

Red Dress – $25 at Tobi.com

Heels – $48 at Modcloth.com

Necklace – $42 at Macys.com

Clutch – $21 at Sears.com
