Justin Timberlakes 2009 GQ outfit clearly shows how classic styles never go out of style. His high-top Pumas and skinny jeans give his trench the perfect urban feel, while his sleek tie completes the look. A great way for sneaker enthusiasts to look more polished and still wear sneakers.

Three Ways To Style A Sports Coat

October 24, 2014 by
Filed under Boys on the Side

A sharp sports coat can be like an artists canvas in many ways but a lot of times I notice that most men wear them in their typical ways; with a button up and slacks or a white shirt and jeans and if the occasion needs it a tie. All perfectly acceptable ways of wearing a sports jacket but very basic and in a way boring. A mans sports jacket can actually be really dressed up, down, and even made to look quirky and fun. There are tons of ways to rock a sports jacket. Below I picked 3 sports jacket and styled them three very different ways.

T-Shirt & Trousers

As I begin to make my way into the work force I find myself wanting to look more sharp and presentable but not over dressed because I do live in florida. So lately I’ve been trying my hand at t-shirts and trousers with either Sperry’s or slip-on loafers. It’s a simple look that doesn’t really take much to put together and it’s easy for me to layer up when it finally does get cool. Below are some pieces and inspiration for this simple yet professional look.

T-Shirt & Trousers

For this look try these: herring bone trousers , penny loafers , white tee

Men’s Bomber Jackets

Back in the 90’s bomber jacket were seen mainly in black and green with orange interiors, but thanks to the modern shapes, textures and colors that they now come in they’ve made a huge comeback. I personally think they look best in black (see Kanye and Kim below) but there are tons of options to fit everyone’s style. Wear it for fall with a white tee and jeans and for winter layer with sweaters and cords.

How To Choose The Perfect Trench Coat For Men

March 28, 2014 by
Filed under Boys on the Side

The basis of the trench coat is always the same, no matter the interpretation and personal twist the different designers might give it, but finding the right one for you is not as easy as you may think.

It’s all a matter of finding the right colour, the right length and the right fit for you, but once you do find it you will have a timeless piece to use and re-use endless times over the years.

Here is my advice on what to look for in the perfect trench coat and make sure it truly is the right one for you!

Choose the fabric carefully

Gabardine: this is the original fabric used for the trench coat and it is waterproof, lightweight and durable. It has everything that you would want from this garment! I believe this is the best material, not only for practicality, but also because it looks great.

Leather: if you are a fan of the dramatic flare, then there are always leather trench coats for you. They are not my favourites as they are very heavy and I don’t think they look terribly good on men, so I would stay far away from them if I were you!

New fabrics: many designers are now trying out new fabrics for their trench coats like event fabrics and gore text which are great for staying dry. They also look quite good and definitely constitute a good alternative to the classic gabardine.

It’s All About The Color

Neutral colour: the classic colours for the trench coat are khaki and beige. These neutral hues are the most versatile and, in my opinion, also the sexiest ones on a guy. The only downside is that being that light they get dirty really easily. (Image on the left via mensclothing.alphaconsumers.com)

Blue: navy blue is another classic colour for trench coats and it has the extra perk of being more practical and difficult to get dirty.

Different colours: of course you can find trench coats in any colour, from burgundy to silver, which make much more of a statement and are for sure different from the others. Anyhow, if it’s your first trench coat, I would  go more for a classic colour and then, once you have your great timeless piece, you can think about having fun and check out other possibilities.

Talking about fit and length…

Classic trench: a classic, timeless trench is double-breasted, it has a belt, cuff straps and pockets. The length is just above the knees and it has that retro flare that makes it so iconic. It is certainly a style that will never fade and you will be able to wear it for years and years to come.

Cropped trench: trenches today are going shorter and shorter and the trend right now is for them to sit just below the waist. If you want to go for something that is more on trend right now, you can go for a cropped trench coat. It’s also the ideal solution if you are a bit on the shorter side! (Picture on the right via Debenhams)

New trench: if you want to break away completely from tradition, there are lots of new trench models that do just that. No belts, single-breasted, zipper closure instead of buttons. One could argue that if you take away all these things it’s not a trench coat anymore, but I think it’s still a great modern and fresh alternative to it.

At stores like Debenhams and Boden they have a great selection of trench coats for men for really reasonable prices. Plus, you can find amazing deals on websites like My Voucher Codes that make them even more convenient.
