How to Steal the Show With Your New Year’s Eve Dress This Year

Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.45 PMCan you believe another year has almost drawn to a close? We might not have gotten through all 365 days just yet, but it’s never too early to start planning your New Year’s Eve dress. Many women have a tough time choosing what to wear for New Year’s, so here are our tips on how to be the belle of the ball:

  • Kill the holiday colors!

Showing up at a New Year’s party in holiday colors is the fashion equivalent of not taking your Christmas lights down till Easter. Christmas is over, so put your red and green back in the closet for next year—it’s time to turn over a new leaf! There are many colors that can work well for New Year’s Eve dresses, but we recommend going with either gold or silver. Dresses in these colors can be extremely eye-catching without being overwhelming and they go nicely with the optimistic vibe of a holiday dedicated to optimism, resolutions, and looking forward to the coming year. Alternatively you can even work some brighter spring colors into your ensemble, but do it in small doses—remember, we may be looking ahead but it will still be many months before flowers are blooming outside.

  • Sparkles and sequins.Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.34 PMAlso going hand in hand with the New Year’s spirit is anything that sparkles or glitters—and that means sequins are a YES for New Year’s Eve party dresses. As always with sequins, think carefully about how to gleam without blinding anyone: a red sequin dress, for example, is extremely showy whereas a silver or blue sequin dress, or a classic black sequin number, is a nice contrast of reserved and glittery. For brighter dresses, consider those that have sequin details but are not head-to-toe shimmer.

  • Have a ball.
  • Unlike pumpkins at Halloween, turkeys at Thanksgiving, or trees at Christmas, New Year’s Eve doesn’t exactly have its own trademarked symbol. But if there is one iconic image associated with New Year’s, it’s the dropping of the ball at Times Square, with all the excitement that final countdown entails. That means New Year’s is the perfect time to rustle up some spherical earrings. Just make sure they don’t look like Christmas tree ornaments—see also #1 above!

  • Relax.
  • Remember, New Year’s is the end of the holiday season and by now most people are nearly partied out. You can choose virtually any style dress that fits you well and enjoy your champagne in style; there is no strict theme you need to master for New Year’s Eve.

What are you going to wear when the ball drops this year?

Have you spent all your time planning what to buy your nearest and dearest and how best to impress the in-laws this Christmas, completely forgetting about yourself? Don’t worry; help is on hand. We’ve picked out five of the best Christmas party dresses from House of Fraser so you don’t have to waste time hunting around yourself; now you can focus on primping that turkey and wrapping your truly inspired Christmas gifts and you can do it all in style.

Karen Millen Hard Metallic Jacquard Dress

Every woman needs an LDB in her wardrobe and this one from Karen Millen is a real winner. Made from 100% silk with lace overlay, this stunning cocktail dress not only ticks all the boxes for winter 2011/12, but will last through the ages as its classic shift shape is timeless. This foiled lace and lurex panelled dress has a dramatic and elegant draped Georgette shoulder strap and fitted but not clingy shape. This statement dress needs little in the way of accessories. A pair of gold or silver metallic platforms should be quite enough.

Therapy All Over Sequin Dress

Shimmering, shining metallic dresses are the hottest styles on the high street this Christmas. This bold, golden dress from Therapy will help you stand out from all those fairy lights and baubles. It has a loose sixties style shape, with sleeves to the elbow and rounded neckline. Its casual shape is perfectly contrasted with the statement making material covered in thousands of golden sequins.

Cutie Mesh Waist Dress

This show stopping red dress from Cutie is unbelievably sexy. Its bodycon shape and mesh sections above and below the bust will make you the centre of attention. This dress isn’t for the wallflowers among you as it is figure hugging and leaves little to the imagination, but as a party dress, this is a real winner.

BIBA Asymmetric One Shoulder Maxi Dress

Maxis aren’t just for summer. This stunning dress from BIBA proves maxis are year-round essentials. This beautiful blue metallic dress is a mixture of classic Hollywood glamour and seventies disco fever. The ruched and draped detailing add interest and help to flatter the silhouette whilst the one-shoulder strap keeps it modern and fresh.

Warehouse Colourblock Soft Slouchy Dress

Reminiscent of the 1940s skirt and blouse combinations, this two-tone dress from Warehouse is relaxed yet sexy. It looks like two separates, but the creamy, slight rouched one-shoulder top and black tulip skirt are actually one dress. It’s simple, sassy and perfect for a night out with the girls.

The Red Hot Trend

One of the easiest ways to stand out in a crowd is to wear a sexy, head turning hue of red. Not only is it a red hot trend this season but it’s also a staple for the holiday’s.  Before you convince your self that red doesn’t complement your hair or skin tone, consider these tips to choose the right shade of red (whether it’s lipstick, a sexy red mini or earrings)..  Fair-skinned women should look for shades with blue undertones, like cherry. Medium-skinned women should look for basic reds like apple or fire engine red. Darker-skinned women should look for “blood-red” shades like garnet. Give it a shot!

Red culottes – keep it simple with solid colors and basic pumps.

Red Skinny Jeans by Reuse Jeans a musician endorsed line that are made from 80% recycled denim.  I personally own these and they’re probably one of the comfiest pair of jeans I own!  I’ve paired them with a black blazer, a sequined tank and heels – simple and sexy!

A basic trench is a chic and easy way to incorporate red into your wardrobe.

This boat neck top would look adorable with flared jeans or trousers.

A scrumptious cashmere and wool scarf in this wine/red is perfection!

Holiday Chic On The Cheap

There’s nothing more hectic than the holiday rush, particularly when it comes to that last minute hunt for the perfect party outfit on a tight budget. But there’s no reason to let the tough economy put a damper on your festive style and mood. Check out some of my chic on the cheap ideas with items you already have in your closet.

  • Reinvent your favorite black party dress with a big, bold brooch to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn.
  • Pair your favorite jeans with a velvet blazer or sequin top and throw on some red high heels – sexy!
  • Wear your favorite white button down with a red belt – perfect with a pencil skirt, maxi skirt or trousers
  • Take any basic knit and add a little plaid (preferably the classic black and white) a button down, a bag or dressy scarf.  I love plaid for the holidays! Everyone aways thinks of lumber jack plaid, but if chosen correctly it can actually be very chic.
  • Metallic colors are the easiest way to scream, “PARTY!” without breaking the bank.  In a head to toe black outfit, try metallic ballerina flats or a metallic clutch. Or, consider a metallic colored tank to layer under a turtleneck with a mini.

Christmassy Cocktail Dresses

Disclosure: The  following is a guest post

I was out shopping a few days ago and noticed that the Christmas dresses are all out in force.  I absolutely love this time of year, with rail after rail glistening with cocktail dresses, glittering with sequins and sparkles galore.  That has to be the key thing I look for when I go to buy a dress for my Christmas party – it’s GOT to sparkle!

Christmas is probably the only time of year that we could get away with wearing such a ridiculously sparkly dress, so make the most of it.  We are lucky that gorgeous cocktail dress come in tons of styles and designs – the hardest part is choosing one.  A sequined dress doesn’t just inject a touch of glamour; it also puts me in mind of the Hollywood starlets of the past.  And another thing – cocktail dresses don’t have to be black!  I get so bored when I’m chatting to my girlfriends about our Christmas cocktail dresses and they all begin with “Well it’s black….” So I went on the hunt for a sparkly, sequined dress of COLOR.

When I typed the words “sequined cocktail dress” into my search engine, there were tonnes of sites popping up, and a lot of them were money-motivated.  The top sites were the ones offering cocktail dresses at around a mere $30, which got my pulse racing  (and so many styles, from retro and modern to racy and demure). I adored the red sequined numbers but was worried I would come across as a bit of a Jessica Rabbit wannabe, so settled with a gorgeous lilac dress with a shabby chic feel – brought to you by Kate Moss no less!  So remember, when it comes to cocktail dresses, black isn’t always best!
