Update: The winner of the “Nantucket” dress from Shabby Apple is Christy with the following comment ” I would wear this to my christmas party.” Congratulations Christy and a big thank you to all who participated!

I’m so excited I was offered the opportunity to hand pick one dress from Shabby Apple Dresses for a giveaway to one lucky Fashiongrail fan! Shabby Apple was started by women for women to bring dresses back to what they used to be…a one piece outfit. Their impeccable selection of dresses have a modern, vintage-y feel that is just to die for (not to mention flirty and fun and with subtle hints of sex appeal!).   Guaranteed to flatter any figure, I chose the Nantucket because of its classic silhouette, v-neck collar, full skirt and pockets (I love me a dress with pockets!).  Shabby Apple is also offering Fashiongrail fans a 10% discount good good for 30 days after the giveaway (just enter “fashiongrail10off ” at checkout).

How to enter: Leave a comment below stating where you’d wear this dress; then head on over to Facebook and “Like” the Shabby Apple Dresses fan page (make sure you state that you did so in the comments below). One random winner will be chosen on November 21st. For an extra entry you can also tweet the giveaway.   Shabby Apple will ship the prize directly to the winner.  Must be shipped to an address in the U.S.  Good luck!

Looking Outside the Box: Prom Dresses for All Ages

I don’t know about you but I get tired of going to the same stores and seeing the same limited selection every time.  I was getting so frustrated searching for a dress to wear to my boyfriend’s formal when I stumbled upon the David’s Bridal site (I swear I wasn’t looking at wedding dresses!).  But who knew they had dresses for all kinds of occasions besides weddings?  They actually have a lot of beautiful prom dresses that were suitable and affordable, including the one below that I fell in love with.

This charmeuse dress is a fun twist on the typical little black dress, but still looks classic.  And I know it’s difficult to tell in this picture but there are subtle sequins throughout the flowered skirt that add just the right amount of sparkle.  I can’t wait to wear it!  With winter formals and holiday parties coming up I’m sure you’re all going to be facing the same dress searching dilemma.  I never thought I’d buy another prom dress but look outside the box and you just might be pleasantly surprised!

Celeb Style: One Shoulder Dresses

When talking about the one shoulder trend, it’s hard not to conjure up the iconic image of Jennifer Beals in Flashdance from the ’80’s.  At the time, that mere hint of skin was considered daring, dangerous, sexy and demure…not bad for something so easy to wear!  The one shoulder trend is still popular and sexy; especially when it’s a one shoulder party dress.  The key here is to keep it simple, just like Selena Gomez.  Avoid cluttering the look with accessories like scarfs and necklaces.  Let the shoulder do all the work, which is the beauty of the one shoulder trend: there isn’t much to it, but it sure leaves lots to the imagination 🙂  If you don’t go strapless, be smart about the strap and either use a clear strap (not my first pick, but effective) or a cute bra strap.  And keep it casual so you don’t distract from the shoulder!

Holiday Chic On The Cheap

There’s nothing more hectic than the holiday rush, particularly when it comes to that last minute hunt for the perfect party outfit on a tight budget. But there’s no reason to let the tough economy put a damper on your festive style and mood. Check out some of my chic on the cheap ideas with items you already have in your closet.

  • Reinvent your favorite black party dress with a big, bold brooch to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn.
  • Pair your favorite jeans with a velvet blazer or sequin top and throw on some red high heels – sexy!
  • Wear your favorite white button down with a red belt – perfect with a pencil skirt, maxi skirt or trousers
  • Take any basic knit and add a little plaid (preferably the classic black and white) a button down, a bag or dressy scarf.  I love plaid for the holidays! Everyone aways thinks of lumber jack plaid, but if chosen correctly it can actually be very chic.
  • Metallic colors are the easiest way to scream, “PARTY!” without breaking the bank.  In a head to toe black outfit, try metallic ballerina flats or a metallic clutch. Or, consider a metallic colored tank to layer under a turtleneck with a mini.
