5 Must Have Transitional Pieces

I don’t know about you but it’s hard for me to walk away from a good deal.  If you hit the stores now you’ll probably run into all the new fall items at full price and sitting right there in the clearance rack a ton of adorable summer pieces at great prices…looking to justify that impulse buy and turn it into a piece you’ll wear all through fall?  It’s pretty simple!  With the right tights, leggings, sweaters and more importantly shoes you can easily wear any one of those items sitting in clearance and if you hold off a bit you can even possibly save a couple of bucks on the full priced fall selection.  Check out five must have transitional picks to help you transition all those summer pieces.

Pair a chevron maxi skirt or these camo leggings with all your favorite summer tops now and later on with boots a slouchy turtleneck and  a denim jacket.  It will scream fall!

Camo Leggings – $13 at |  Chevron Maxi Skirt – $19.99

Give your summer pieces a cozy chic look with a waterfall cardigan that you’ll be able to wear all year round.  Wear with your shorts and sandals now and later add some tights and booties.

Waterfall Cardigan – $47 at

A long sleeve tee in black and white can help transition your tees and worn under dresses.

Long Sleeve Tee – $10 at

Tights are a must have for fall and winter and make the transitioning process a cinch.

Control Top Tights – $6.49 at

Boots are one of the main reason I love the colder weather so why wait till it’s cold out.  Wear them with a maxi skirt and a crop top  now and then wear them right through winter.

Steve Madden Creation – $100 at

Fall Winter 2010-2011 Trend: Nouveau Boho

Nouveau Boho

The Boho trend — bandanas, short leather jackets, casual jeans, oversized blouses, printed blouses, fringes retro 1960′s and 70′s — has held a fashion stronghold since around 2005.  The trend is still a mainstay for Fall Winter 2010-2011, with some current updates to make it NOUVEAU BOHO.

Look for: Green, eco-friendly accessories and recycled, re-purposed materials.  Base metals, antiqued finishes and collections update the boho look with an edge.   Stacked bracelets or layered and multi-chain necklaces continue to lead.  Chose structure — wide belts, jackets — to update boho with a touch more sophistication than the flowing formless predecessor look.

Colors: Earth tones with bursts of bright color

Twisted Must-Haves:

Summer is ending and the smell of autumn is already in the air. You know what that means? Accessory time!! This fall, it’s all about what you wear over your clothes.  Bracelets, especially bangles, look amazing when stacked or layered atop fitted long sleeve shirts. And since it’s fall, as usual, rustic colors are in. However this year, mix it up with unique gems like marcasite, tiger eye, jade and aventurine. Plaid Plaid and More Plaid

I can’t emphasize the following sentiment enough: Nothing “screams” Fall more than the classic print plaid.  The options are limitless whether its a skirt, jacket, handbag or even shoes.  Plaid be can be dressed up or down just like the  outfits available at Madewell.  However, when wearing plaid the trick is to keep in mind that less is more.  Let the plaid be the statement piece and keep all other pieces as simple as possible.  For example, if you plan on wearing a plaid skirt DON”T wear a ruffled shirt (the combination will create a costume-like look. Instead, try a turtle neck).  Also, stay away from “cliched plaid” like pleated mini skirts or tights!  In this case, the outfit will ultimately give you that school girl tramp look (ala Britney Spears in her infamous “Oops I Did It Again” video).

And finally, if plaid outfits are not your thing, try plaid accessories.  There is so much room to play with in the accessory category; like bags, brooches and scarves.  Have fun!

My Five Top Fall Trends

Still shopping for Fall? Not me!  Check out some of my favorite Fall trends :

Full skirts
Flattering on most and perfect for day or night.  Wear them with  snug turtle necks, cardigans or a warm wool jacket on the cooler evenings.

Yes, that’s right I said  sandals!  Get some extra mileage out of them before storing for the Winter months.   Strappy sandals (or peep-toe pumps) look fabulously chic with dark tights.

The Dolman sleeve
Nothing will make you look more “unintentionally chic” like a dolman sleeve.  Wear it with skinny jeans or a pencil skirt.

Anything Plaid
It is the print of the Fall season and one of the most versatile.    Wear it with anything you own and instantly transform your look.  Try a plaid skirt with a fitted jacket.  Slide into your favorite jeans and throw on a plaid vest.  And for an easy yet snappy touch, just grab the durable plaid scraf.

I can’t even to begin to explain how obsessed I am with layering.  It’s such a simple yet fabulous way to add depth and character to ANYTHING!  The key to layering is keeping the look light and polished.  When layering,  always shoot for the lightest fabric possible.  For example, take your long lean tank tops normally only worn in the Summer (tank tops are perfect for adding depth because they peek out under neath the top layer)  and wear it under a light blouse, slip on a light v-neck sweater and then a fitted jacket.  I’m telling ya, it’s super easy and you’ll look AMAZINGLY put together.

Wide leg pants
You can’t go wrong with wide leg pants particularly when paired with a vest or a wrap shirt.  It will nip your waist and make your legs look long and lean.  Who doesn’t want that?
