What Fuels My Passion: Brooklyn

I grew up in Brooklyn (specifically the Bushwick area) and to some Brooklyn may seem like a big city.  But when you’re born and raised there it can feel somewhat small.  I rarely left Brooklyn because everything I needed was all with a few blocks, which meant I did all and I mean all of my shopping there including clothing. For the most part everyone hit the shops on Knickerbocker and Myrtle Avenue and these stores had clothing spilling out the front doors at very reasonable prices.  Sounds awesome right?  Well yes and no.  The problem with shopping these great little stores was that everyone else shopped there too and that meant walking around wearing what everyone else was wearing (and when walking is your primary source of transportation it can get a little annoying).

My passion and love for shopping really exploded when I was around 13 and finally got a little freedom to ride the subway to branch out and explore the Village, the malls and stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx.   I started to appreciate the cheap finds and found it an art to mix them with vintage finds from the Village with trendier pieces at the mall. I was hooked and I still am!  From that point on I needed to express and share my love of shopping and style.  At first I found my outlet by working at retail stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom where I had my own clients and did some personal shopping, but I needed more and that’s when I created Fashiongrail and became involved in social media.  It truly is the best of both worlds for me because now I get to make a living writing about my passion while I am at home with my kids.  When I get the chance I fly up to Brooklyn and do a little shopping (only now I bring along my boys). Doesn’t get any better.  Everyday I open up my laptop and look for little ways to inject this Brooklyn girls way of shopping into everything in my life.

Celebrity Copycat: Solange Knowles’ Look for Less!

Solange Knowles’ outfit pulls at this brooklyn girls heart! I love everything about her outfit! The unfinished ends on the sweater instantly makes it chic; the shorts are sexy; the sneakers (which BTW I totally prefer these types of sneaks as opposed to the wedge sneaker) glam it all up and the Chanel bag gives it class 🙂
