Hollywood Style Icon Beach Inspiration

In this day and age magazine and online media publications constantly use stick thin women as their cover girls, yet just 50 years ago fabulous Hollywood superstars were gracing our magazine covers with womanly hips and curvy hourglass figures.

Each year many women panic over their body image especially when going on holiday so why not take a trip down memory lane to the days of Monroe, when being curvy was sexy and use our beach inspiration looks for your summer holiday this year to make you feel good.

Marilyn Monroe has to be the No1 icon of our time as she is known for her size 14/16 curvy figure; today not many women over a size 6 are referred to as being a pin up!  Like many women, Marilyn’s weight fluctuated and when she was unhappy she ate more but to all men she was always a sex symbol no matter what her dress size was. Marilyn once made a statement which has become a memorable saying on the subject of weight: ““To all the girls that think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, its society who’s ugly.”

Monroe was well known for her blonde curls and ruby red lips and no matter where she went she always looked sensational – even on the beach in her costume and revealing beach outfits!

If there is a holiday coming up in your schedule then try pairing a beautiful white costume and these ballet pumps from Lotus Shoes which are similar style and colour to Marilyn’s, and make sure to do your hair and make-up to give you that extra confidence boost!

You would often find Monroe wearing bathing suits rather than two pieces as not only were they fashionable at the time but they are extremely flattering for the stomach making them a very desirable essential to take away on holiday.

Marilyn always had the skill to pull of amazing accessories on the beach like this red two piece, skirt styled bikini (which is slimming on the thighs) and a summary yellow shawl which looks beautiful draped around the neck!

Here she is sporting another slimming bathing suit in a metallic green colour and yet again her hair and make-up is perfectly done for that added confident and sex appeal on the beach.

There is no better feeling than wearing heels as they create the illusion of slimmer and longer legs and Marilyn often wore heeled sandals or wedges to the beach to create this exact illusion.

Find a similar pair of heeled sandals to Marilyn from the selection of Lotus Sandals as these will make the perfect addition to any beach look!

2013 Summer Bathing Suit Trends

When it comes to bathing suits I need to have variety because they’re worn year round here in Florida.  For the most part it’s nice to be able to strolll on the beach any time of the year, but it can be a bit exhausting thinking about being bathing suit ready ALL YEAR!  With that in mind I treat my bathing suits like I do my clothes.  I look for trends and fits that flatter, rather than the itsy bitsy bikini (although I do keep one handy for those days I’m feeling brave) and I also keep an eye out for pieces that can be mixed and matched.  This year women’s swimwear is so fun and playful!  I’m loving the retro fits that are fun and flirty, color blocked two pieces that are great for mixing and matching and classic nautical stripes that never go out of style making them a great investment.  Tip: Tempted to stick to a one piece?  Try a tankini instead (see below). They give you the coverage and the option of swapping out the top or bottom for a sexier look.  Which ever style you decide to go with, Anne Cole swimwear has got you covered.  Check out my favorite bathing suits under $100.

Color Blocking: A trendy color block bikini with just the right amount of coverage!  Tip: Tie a large bright scarf off your beach bag and later on you can use it as a shrug. Color Block One Piece – $66

Stripes: This striped bikini is perfect to mix with solid pieces like the one below. Tip: When choosing stripes keep in mind that the smaller they are the smaller you look. Camel In The Sand Bikini – $36

Classics: A navy bikini is always in style and a must have for mixing and macthing. Tip: When mix and matching swimsuit pieces opt for a solid bottom.  It’s a lot easier to wear a printed top than bottom. Marilyn Halter Side Tie Bikini – $31.50

Retro: A floral print tankini is perfect for stylish moms on the go.  Tip: Keep a cotton cardigan on hand if you plan on making it a whole day at the beach. Desert Floral Tankini – $46.50

Summer Basic: A solid black swimsuit is just like your favorie little black dress – easy to wear for day or night.  Tip: Keep a maxi skirt tucked in your beach bag and you’re good to go for dinner or a stroll on the boardwalk. Lingerie Malliot One Piece  – $78

Stylish:  A embellished one piece swimsuit screams glamour!  It’s the bathing suit you take on your vacation and then sit by the pool and sip on a pina colada! 🙂 Beaded Bikini– $52

My Old Navy Summer Swim Style

Old Navy is a long time favorite of mine for its affordable fashions for all seasons…and I’m like a kid in a candy store whenever they run any of their sales… especially during the summer! Starting now, Old Navy has incredible summer deals going on now from June 14 through June 27, their always cute and flattering swimsuit styles starting at only $10!

Not only do I live in Florida but I have kids that love to go to the beach, so stocking up swimsuits and summer clothes is a special OldNavy outing for the whole family.  In fact, swimsuits are often incorporated into my attire and Old Navy has a ton of options that I regularly mix and match with outfits. And, with my Fourth of July BBQ around the corner, the Old Navy sale is perfectly timed! Check out some of my favorites below!

My top two Old Navy bathing suits  are sexy with the perfect amount of coverage (a mother must-have!). BONUS: If you have a day trip planned and don’t want to pack a change of clothes, the bathing suits can easily be paired with Old Navy shorts or a skirt and flip flops (I buy Old Navy flip flops by the bulk every year).

I also adore these two sexy bathing suits, particularly because they enable you to swap out the pieces with one another giving you an entirely different look.

For my boys I wanted to highlight the green and black board shorts.  Being a frugal mama I tend to only buy solid colored shorts so I can pair them with a variety of Old Navy tees.

Old Navy brings fashion fun to the whole family: from trendy threads to trusty basics, for newborns through adults, all at prices that are oh-so-right.
