Personalize School Uniforms in 123

I’ve never experienced the ease of having any of my kids wear uniforms to school. We’ve always shopped for outfits they liked and added pieces throughout the year. This year, my son Robert has both options, you can wear a uniform or a more personalized form of uniform, which means on one day he can wear his uniform, khakis and a polo, and the next day, wear his polo with his favorite jeans from Target. His school is pretty flexible as long as we follow the guidelines and I have got to be honest, I’ve never been so excited! With all the new stylish back-to-school-apparel and uniforms that can easily be mixed and matched at Target I knew this would be not only fun to shop for but easy AND affordable!

Initially, Robert was hesitant on having to wear a uniform but because of the flexibility the school is offering, he’s able to still express his individual style. We picked a classic navy blue polo, dark wash skinny jeans (which he’s obsessed with), a few button-ups for layering and we even included some of last year’s tees to compliment his outfits. The idea was to have him look ready for school with a stylish, personal touch!

For his first look we kept it simple with his blue polo layered over a striped tee, rolled up skinny jeans (his idea) and slip on sneakers. Doesn’t he look cute?!

In the second fall inspired look, we took a few more back-to-school key pieces from Target and layered his look with a button-up and tee.

With Target’s stylish back-to-school-apparel and newly redesigned “comfy jeans”, Robert can relax knowing that he can still let his stylish side shine even with a uniform. Looks like I now have a shopping buddy for my weekly Target runs!

The ABC’s of Looking Cool for Back-To-School

The ABC's of Looking Cool for Back-To-School

This summer has flown right by us this year. In less than four weeks all of my boys will be headed back to school and it’s never too early to get ready when you have five kids. We’ve already begun getting organized and have a plan to get things done but there are still a few things we need to wrap up and for that we plan on heading to our local Target. I’m already there on a weekly basis running around with a cup of coffee in hand but when back to school season kicks in, all of my boys want to join in on my Target run and I love it!

Robert is going into 5th grade and right now it’s all about having his say in what he wears, what supplies he uses and how cool everything looks. For this I count on Target who makes back-to-school shopping easy and fun for me and my boys. Check out some of our favorite back-to-school items to ensure a cool new start to school.

Licensed characters are a back-to-school must-have for any kid! Robert is a diehard Avengers fan so this year we’ll be snagging all of his favorite items like the Avengers backpack and lunchbox (of course Target also has a huge variety of Star Wars, Frozen and Minions gear to choose from).

Abcs of looking cool for back to school

I try to teach my kids how to style themselves as soon as they know how to dress themselves, but to make their back-to-school selection easier I buy them lots of pieces they can mix and match. Lots of solid color tees that match with anything, button ups for layering and to help transition out of summer shorts I plan on buying Target’s new reinvented stretchy jeans that are now more comfy with a worn in feel. This helps them develop their own sense of style without having to get involved too much.

The ABC's of Looking Cool for Back-To-School

Back-to-school lists are pretty standard: They request a dozen or more notebooks, pens, paper, crayons etc. To make the supplies have a more personal feel, we choose supplies with flair! Look for patterns and colors that pop like a striped notebook and supplies with bright colors.

The ABC's of Looking Cool for Back-To-School

Another thing we do each year is buy a brand new pack of permanent markers and I let the kids go nuts and personalize their stuff with initials and doodles they draw. The idea is to bring a sense of creativity to their back-to-school basics and make it more exciting.

The ABC's of Looking Cool for Back-To-School

This year Target has made it a little easier to do just that with the school list assist – an online destination built specifically to help you find the exact supplies you need and you can then either pick it up at the store (my favorite method) or have it shipped right to your door. It doesn’t get any simpler than that!

What are some of your kids’ must-haves for back-to-school?

Getting my kids ready for back to school has always been my favorite time of the year!  I love shopping for their new shoes and outfits.  Last weekend I took advantage of Tax Free Weekend and bought them the majority of their clothes.  I still have school supplies and hair cuts but I’ll get that done after registration.  I hit up my favorite store like Ross, Marshall’s and TJ Maxx but I did find a lot of great deals at Bealls (a FL family department store).  My little one was determined to get himself a pair of sneaks that had some type of bright color in them so these Nike’s were perfect!

Click here to find me on Instagram 🙂

Famous Footwear sent me some gift cards to shop their store and used my last one on these metallic sandals (read about them here)

While shopping for the boys at JC Penney I found Joe Fresh flip flops for only $1.99 and in the perfect shade of green!  SCORE!

I saw this bow tie tee and had to have it for my Bobby!  I bought the plaid button down for only $7.99 and the tee for $4.99 at Ross.

Looks like another Anderson was bitten by the musical bug. 🙂

How To Choose The Right Homecoming Dress

July 24, 2013 by
Filed under Fashion Tips & Finds

I can’t believe that school starts in less than a month down here in Florida and in September for a majority of others.  It’s gone by way too fast but with the sadness of summer being almost over comes the excitement of some fall favorite’s like football, back to school shopping and for girls shopping for  homecoming dresses!  I have a bunch of boys so I don’t exactly have the pleasure of going out shopping for a pretty dress but I fondly recall my school dances and I do wish I had the selection girls have now a day.  With a little savvy shopping, girls can buy a unique dress as opposed to the carbon copies I found lined in the boutique store fronts in Brooklyn, and most dresses today can be worn a ton of other times (if you don’t go too frilly).

Check out some tips on picking a unique homecoming dress under $200 that can be worn more than once.  I also included some accessories and tips on what to wear them with below.

Details

Look for little details like beading or tulle that make a dress look more expensive and can dressed up now or down later on.

Length

I know girls love a floor length dress because it feels glamorous, but if you want to get the most for your dollar skip them.  If not shop online shops for dresses under $100 and look for simple lines so they won’t quickly go out of style.

Material

Avoid satin.  Yes they look expensive and pretty but they also scream formal and most girls will have some form of satin on.  Instead look for dresses in a matte jersey, with some tulle or if you have to have satin, look for ones with some ruching for a flirty feel.

Accessories

This is where you can go all out!  There’s a ton of affordable accessories out there so pile it on and have fun!  Try big colorful necklaces for a fun pop of color; add sparkly jewelry to bright dresses or try some simple gold jewelry that you can wear over and over again.

Shoes

Use online shoe stores to your benefit.  It’s almost impossible not to find a pair of stylish shoes under $100 and in a lot of cases you can even get a second pair free or half off .  But make sure you order early in case you need to exchange them.

New Brooklyn Based Vintage Clothing Shopping Site – Nifty Thrifty

October 9, 2012 by
Filed under Fashion Tips & Finds

I love vintage clothes!  As a teenager, my parents entire basement was filled with bags and bags of treasured finds from my favorite vintage stores and my car was affectionately dubbed “the closet on wheels.”   It didn’t matter if clothes fit – I would tailor whatever I bought or simply tear it apart and use the pieces for some other project.  Because I currently live in Florida and vintage venue is limited, I couldn’t be more excited about online stores like Nifty Thrifty, a new Brooklyn based (my hometown) member-only vintage clothing site that just launched last week.  The site will curate collections of 50-100 vintage pieces organized into themed sales, such as ‘Weekend Fall Getaway’ or ‘Left Bank Looks’. The Brooklyn based company will initially focus on womenswear, with menswear and home goods soon to follow. At launch, the company will post two sales a week, then increase to a sale a day, eventually building up to multiple flash sales a day. This week’s theme sale starts on October 9th, at 11 am  and will be called  “Campus Cool”.  Pieces will include all-American collegiate inspired sportswear, with cute cardigans, letterman jackets, satchels, blazers and bows, by designers such as Marc Jacobs, Rag and Bone, Moschino, Chloe, Perry Ellis, Agnes B and Cacharel all available at prices that everyone can actually afford!

By early next year, there will be an archive of 1,000 – 3,000 ‘discoverable’ pieces on the site, with an average retail price around $50.  Check out NiftyThrifty.com and make sure to like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to stay up to date on their sales.

Back To School Shopping List With HP

August 28, 2012 by
Filed under Fashion Tips & Finds

It’s that time of year that again – back to school shopping! I don’t know about you but sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming without a detailed check list to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.  In my case, the school provides a handy list of items needed, but I manipulate to include some of my specific needs which is why HP printer comes in handy (not only for back to school lists but also ongoing needs like my blogging and the many school projects all year long).  HP understands that there are different types of customers with tons of different printing needs so  they offer a wide variety of choices at various price points to help maximize value. With my hectic schedule,  my HP always provides a quick, quality print out.

At the top of my list is always hand soap, antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer. We all know that kids bring home a lot more than homework from school and call me paranoid but fevers and colds are NOT welcome!  I also keep it simple with pencil boxes, pens, tons of loose leaf paper, and a USB (which is now a must for middle schoolers), folders to keep the kids organized, glue sticks for projects, white-out for the older kids who are now using pens, new washable crayons and markers, tons of Ziploc bags that I use for everything from snacks to storing jewelry.

Original HP ink delivers unsurpassed quality and reliability so when customers purchase HP ink they know they will get exactly what they pay for— superior performance, value and peace of mind.
