Celebrity Copycat: January Jones’ Look for Less!

January Jones looks amazing!  Everything (minus her trademark smug-looking smile) from her hair down to her shoes is just perfect for spring.  I like the way her jacket gives the feminine floral dress a masculine yet polished look and the shoes are right on trend with the thick block heel – love love love it!

Style Salute to Vintage

You know that infamous saying, what once was old, is new again, well that is exactly what vintage fashion is all about. Vintage style is all about paying homage to the past and bringing it into the here and now – and it is everywhere. We have been seeing these classic, elegant and intricate designs in every aspect of today’s fashion; clothing, shoes, wedding gowns, hairstyles, make-up application and jewelry.

Clothing and Shoes

Vintage always adds an interesting element to clothing fashion. The peplum, which first burst onto the fashion scene in the 1940’s, and then again in the 1980’s, is back in style once more. We are seeing gorgeous variations of peplum skirts and blouses. It’s a striking combination of old meets new. We are also seeing billowy, frilly, and feminine fabrics for women that are reminiscent of popular clothing pieces from the past.

We talk a lot about women’s fashion but what about the guys? Anyone heard of a little TV show called Mad Men? Well, if you have watched it you know that it is a show based in the 1960’s and the guys are snappy dressers – the ladies too, but we are focusing on the men’s fashion right now. If you look at the shoes that those sharp dressed men are wearing, they will probably look familiar to you, oxfords and saddle shoes are being seen on runways, the red carpet and department stores. Combat boots are another vintage style – but they always seem to fit right into the fashion of the times.

Wedding Gowns

Wedding gowns are adorned with vintage accents like lace, peplums, open backs and more. These stunning dresses are reminiscent of dresses of the past, but most of them also contain modern details as well to create a harmonious blend of old world and modern elegance. Wedding gowns aren’t the only vintage detail that brides like to include. They also incorporate it into their décor, bridesmaid’s dresses, accessories, flowers and more!

Hairstyles and Make-up

Intricate braiding, long loose curls, up-dos, pixie cuts and more are being seen everywhere from the runways to main street. Many of these styles span generations and eras but one thing is for certain, they are elegant, carefree and stylish.

False lashes have made a big comeback. In the 60’s thick, long, dark eye lashes were all the rage and many women are embracing this look once again. Most facial make-up is fresh and clean looking, while the eyes take center stage.

Jewelry

Vintage jewelry is hot, hot, hot. Antique or vintage inspired diamond tennis bracelets mix unique designs with elegant features. They have been a true must-have for the well-dressed woman for decades. When perusing for statement jewelry with a vintage edge, look for diamond eternity rings (with stones all the way around) and tennis bracelets that have beautiful millgrain, beaded edges, or intricate filigree details. Other sophisticated vintage detailing includes beautiful pave as well as round, princess, and asher cut diamond center stones. A one of a kind piece incorporating vibrant colored gemstones or pearls is yet another way to add vintage flare to your ensemble.

SS13 Trends: Clutch Bags

April 12, 2013 by

Now it appears that Robert Pattinson is once more off the market, it’s time to turn our attention to a new form of arm candy, and this season’s clutch bag trends are sufficiently gorgeous to make us forget about R-Patz… for now, at least.

Jewel-toned metallics are hot this season, thanks to Burberry’s runway of shimmering metallic trench coats, and clutch bags are no exception to the candy-wrapper-esque look.  Pick a purse in a shiny shade of emerald, ruby or sapphire, or else embrace the season’s other colourful trend- Neon. Eye-burningly bright fluorescent hues are big news right now, with popping pinks and citric tones courtesy of Oscar de la Renta, Simone Rocha and  House of Holland to name a few. MSGM’s cruise collection takes on two trends, centring pieces around neon florals and bold monochrome stripes, which provide a refreshing makeover to the boring black bag. For those magpies amongst you searching for some sparkle- the statement embellished clutch is for you.

My favourite clutch of the season is for the fashion risk takers- the revival of the transparent Lucite bag, once popular with a certain Ms Monroe back in the 1950’s. These perspex purses have been spotted on many a member of the fash-pack, displaying their contents for the world to see. But for those more concerned with their privacy, opt for a style with an inner pouch.

Where shape is concerned, structured box bags take centre stage with fashionistas trading in their soft purses for a modern, hard case clutch. Elsewhere, SS13 also sees clutches of the fold over style alongside maxi envelope clutches for chic daytime carrying.

Reese Wtherspoon’s outfit is a busy mom dream come true!  The basic pieces, like the button down, pullover and jeans, become effortlessly stylish because of the hat and booties…and the bag injects the perfect pop of color to the overall outfit.  Easy to wear and easy to grab right from the hanger without much thought put into it – and you’ll get a ton of mileage out of every single piece.  You can dress up the look with a sparkly necklace and bright slingbacks or give it a summer feel with shorts and sandals.

Bold Trench Coats for Spring

April 9, 2013 by

What’s spring without a trench?  While most people have a trench hanging in there closet, it’s usually beige, black or white.  But this season is all about going bold!  Consider trying a fun and bright trench that will really stand out in the crowd. Tip:  go light when buying a trench that way you can get tons of wear out of it by styling it more as a blazer.

Orange Trench Coat – $60

This bright orange trench would look perfect over stripes or florals.

Sky Blue Trench Coat – $155

A baby blue trench screams spring and would sweeten a pair of leather leggings.

Double Breasted Trench Coat – $122

Try a yellow double breasted trench like Olivia Palermo and Zoe Saldana.

Faux Leather Panel Trench Coat – $65

This trench isn’t exactly bright but it’s got  so much style it doesnt need it!  Pair it with a white tank and boyfriend jeans and you’re good to go!

Jamie Chung’s stripe Alice + Olivia dress is perfect for spring functions! It’s cute, flirty, easy to wear and I am loving the pop of blue against the black and white dress.  I replaced Jamie’s dress with a much more affordable one from Target for $29.99 (I own the one from Target and the red belt can easily be swapped out for a black one or no belt at all).  Get Jamie’s look for less from Target, Zara and more.

Men’s Coats: Get Spring Covered

April 6, 2013 by
Filed under Boys on the Side

You may not be wrapping up in layers and padded parkas, but spring still requires outerwear. Here’s a quick guide to the new season’s best cover ups – from the styles to track down to the shades to seek out, you’re sure to meet your match.

Metallic Madness

Shine is in! You don’t have to go all-out Quality Street-style by taking the offerings of designers like Lanvin and Christopher Raeburn as gospel, but don’t shy away from this trend on an unwearability basis; why not try a bomber jacket with metallic sleeves, for example? Not only will you be hitting two trends in one, but this will have enough more traditional fabric to ensure you feel comfortable in it, but with just the right amount of metallic material to pay proper tribute to the trend.

Nicely Nautical

The designers return to it year on year, but with sharp colours, smart/casual appeal and more than a small dose of fun, the nautical trend is worth its reoccurrences. Invest in a navy coat in a light material to give the look a passing nod, or, for a Louis Vuitton-inspired  tailored look, why not opt for a blue or white blazer? They’re more versatile than you’d think; wear with chinos or even tailored shorts for a casual daytime look, and dress it up with a smart shirt and immaculate smart trousers by night.

Come Around To Camo

It may seem a bit ‘surplus army store’ to some of us, but it’s time to embrace this print-tastic trend. For men, military-inspired outerwear is the perfect way to work this – just be sure to keep the rest of your outfit fairly low-key. A heat-friendly light T-shirt and dark jeans are ideal. If you don’t fancy being taken over by the instantly-recognisable smudges of a camo coat, go for a khaki military-style jacket like the one you’ll find here to put a classic spin on this trend.

Celebrity Copycat: Jessica Stroup’s Look for Less!

I know not everyone is going to agree with me on this one but I love this hippie/cowgirl look on Jessica Stroup who’s wearing a H&M conscious exclusive lace dress .  It has that coachella feel that would be perfect if it was just tad shorter, so I went ahead and picked out a variety of lace dresses and boots to compensate. Tip: Looking to refine the look but still keep it funky?  Try a pair of brightly colored pumps and a blazer for the shorter dresses or black booties for the longer versions.

Cavalli’s Sexy New Scent

I absolutely love it when a video is so provocative and visually striking that it immediately captures your imagination from the first frame. To help launch designer Roberto Cavalli’s new fragrance, Just Cavalli, a new video was created to help promote the scent’s sexy spirit. And it worked!  The video is definitely provocative and edgy and includes Cavalli’s trademark animal print motif.  I also adored how the video had a hippie vibe mixed in with a modern day urban spin to highlight the perfume’s aura of youth and seduction.  Discover the Just Cavalli universe below and see for yourself!

Just Cavalli for her is a sexy and provocative new fragrance by Cavalli. Just fun. Just more. Just free. Just now. Just Cavalli.
