So You Want To Get Into The Fashion Industry?

The British fashion industry is one of the most successful in the world, with a report in 2010 pegging its contribution to the economy as £21 billion per year, and in September London was named Fashion Capital of the World by Global Language Monitor for the second year running. Yet with all this success comes fierce competition for jobs, and it can seem impossible for young hopefuls to catch a break in the fashion industry. So how do people do it?

image via We Heart It

First of all, it helps to have put in the groundwork – and that means building a personal portfolio of work and fulfilling qualifications like this that show you’ve devoted time and effort to pursuing your career. Running a fashion blog or YouTube channel is another great way to prove your dedication, make a name for yourself and make some new contacts along the way. Unlike other industries, fashion is one you really have to live just to enter it – it’s not enough to just brush up on your interview skills!

The (slightly painful) truth is that your first job in fashion will probably be an internship. Even though they’re usually unpaid, there is still lots of competition for these places and you’ll need to demonstrate you have the tenacity to work long hours without pay! However, once you’re in, completing an internship at a fashion house or a magazine is a great stepping-stone to your dream job.

Finally, don’t give up – it’s a tough industry and you’ll only get a job if you stick at it month after month. Devote all the time you’re not employed to work on anything that would support an application – your portfolio, blog, list of contacts etc. Good luck!

Maternity Essentials

Every expectant mother will know that as soon as you’re part way through the second trimester, you won’t be able to get away with wearing your usual clothes, and will have to invest in some maternity gear that can stretch as you grow.

Remember, when you’re looking for stylish pieces, that you will only need them for a few months – choose your new wardrobe essentials wisely to avoid spending unnecessary cash. You can find all your maternity needs at George by ASDA if you’re on a budget, meaning your money will go further.

When deciding what items to buy, think of the main essentials that will help you to feel comfortable and look good during your pregnancy, including:

It’s well worth investing in a couple of pairs of maternity jeans, because frankly, they go with everything. Whether you choose Maternity Boot cut Jeans with over-the-bump support, or Maternity Skinny Jeans with an under-the-bump band, there’s plenty to choose from to add to your collection. Stonewash, black or coloured jeans are ideal as they can be dressed up for evenings out, or worn cool and casual for dressed down days.

You can’t get much more comfortable than a pair of joggers for the lazy days. Jersey cotton jogging bottoms are ideal for those days where you just feel like slouching around in maximum comfort. Alternatively, some comfortable pyjama bottoms that both look and feel good are superb once the baby is born and your family are popping round to visit the new addition.

These are essential items that need to have a little stretch in them to accommodate your growing bump. Consider the options, particularly if you’re planning to breast feed; tunics and wraps are particularly good for this reason.

A Good Bra

Invest in several good bras during and after your pregnancy. Take time to be measured at varying stages, as you grow. You need to look after your breasts and they’ll be far more comfortable with the perfect support.

Towards the end of your pregnancy, consider changing over to nursing bras if you’re intending to breastfeed, ready for your new arrival.

A Belly Belt

This invaluable piece can be all you need to save yourself some cash and use clothes that you already have. Attached to the waistband of your current trousers, a belly beltcan stretch as your bump stretches, so the need for other bottoms is minimal.

Equally, a bump band is useful to prevent you flashing your tum. Especially good in winter!

Smart Attire

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to hide yourself away for the duration. Invest in some pretty garments for an evening out, such as a Maternity Sheer Blouse or a Lace Panel Tunic, both available for the small price of £12 from George at ASDA.

Most of all, buy items that you’re going to feel comfortable in. Accessories can make a huge difference and they can be used again and again after birth as well. Satisfy your maternity needs on a budget and enjoy your pregnancy to the max – without maxing out your cards!

Spring Dresses

Besides my kids excitement for Easter egg hunts and candy filled baskets, I always try to fit in a little Easter outfit shopping for myself.  The kids generally stick to the traditional themed attire for the day, but for me the Easter outfit consists of a functional dress that allows me look stylish while also participating in the egg hunt and other festivities.  I also try to pick a dress that can be worn all through spring and preferably even summer.  This Easter I’ll be wearing a lace shift dress and flats to keep me comfy all day! Check out some of the pretty spring dresses from Target below that are perfect for Easter.

A dainty lace dress similar to the one I’m wearing above is feminine enough for day or night.

Lace Bodice Dress – $49.99 | Blue Handbag – $19.99 | Pointy Toe Flats – $29.99

This seersucker dress screams spring and is pretty much a no brainer.  It’s sort of a grown up version of a little girls Easter outfits.  🙂 Wear with a light cardigan and pumps for a traditonal spring look.

Sleeveless Seersucker Dress – $29.99 | Quilted Chain Cross Body – $16.99 | Pointy Toe Heels – $29.99

Any dress with pockets is alright with me!  This floral dress for only $24.99 is one of those dresses that can be worn all year round.  It can be paired with a pair of wedges on Easter morning or a blazer and tights for work.

Floral Dress With Pockets – $24.99 | Wedges – $29.99 | Red Satchel – $32.99

A tulip wrap dress with a retro floral print plus a denim jacket is flawless!  Pair with bright heels for a sexy vibe.

Floral Tulip Dress – $25 | Denim Jacket – $29.99 | Strappy Heels – $29.99

Get a celeb worthy look like Naomi Watts’ with this white shift dress.  Shift dresses are so flattering and never ever go out of style.

Target Style: Top 5 Shoe Trends for Spring

March 13, 2013 by

Spring has always been my favorite season to shop for shoes. The perfect weather makes it super easy to mix winter pieces with fun vibrant shoes on crisp sunny days.  Target’s shoe selection is always fun and because they can be worn right through summer it’s easy to get lost in the aisles without breaking the bank…. even better Target is running a buy one get one half off sale on select shoes!  Check out some of my favorite spring shoe trends and what to wear them with below.

Women’s Mossomo Pemella Demi Wedge – $32.99

My go-to shoe is always a wedge – it provides the height without the discomfort.  These Mossimo Pamella Demi wedges are so cute!  I love the striped navy and green combo – it gives the cork wedges a lot more character and the colors are perfect for transitioning pieces to summer.  Tip:  Roll up your favorite pair of skinny jeans for a chic, laid back look.

Mossimo Kinley Bootie – $34.99

I love the edge that booties give spring clothing.  Perfect for all your colored skinniy jeans or floral spring dresses.  Tip: When looking for a pair keep an eye for a  mid sized heel they’re the ones that will go with everything.

Prabal Gurung for Target Pointy Toe Pumps – $39.99

I have these Prabal Gurung for Target pumps (seen here) and I wear them with a ton of outfits!  At first I was a tad worried that they would overwhelm my outfits but it’s quite the opposite – the print actually gives my outfits a pop of fun color.  I’ve worn them with pastel jeans, a suit and even shorts.  Tip:  Have fun with the print and give it go with an army green jacket or a lace top.

Lace Up Pumps

Prabal Gurung for Target Lace Up Pumps – $39.99

Glamourous and tough is what I think of when I see these lace up pumps.  Their trendy and affordable…does it get any better?  Tip:  Pull out a maxi dress or skirt because these are the perfect match.

Gladiator Heels

Mossimo Gladiator Heels – $29.99

Gladiators are sandals sexy sister.  They go with anything and can easily be worn day or night.  Tip:  Resist the urge to buy a black pair try a deep red for a unexpectedly stylish twist.

 It’s Time for Springtime.

Lace & Flats

I’ve had this white lace shift dress for some time and I would have worn it sooner but it didn’t fit.  Yep this baby has been sitting in my closet for 3 months and 10 pounds.  I kept trying it on every couple of weeks and I was SO happy last week when it actually fit!  I’m still a few pounds of from my goal weight but I’m happy how far I’ve come.

Normally I would be terrified to wear a white dress but being that it’s a shift dress it’s a lot more forgiving. For accessories I kept it simple because I wanted to let the green bag do all the work and for shoes  I was initially going to pair the dress with pointy toe pumps but  I thought they were way too expected and a little dressier than I wanted to look so I decided  to wear these gorgeous flats by London Sole that gave it the perfect balance of dressy and dainty but still casual.

I was so thrilled when I got the  London Sole Henrietta Quilted flats worn by some of my favorite fashionista like Olivia Plaermo, Kate and Pippa Middleton, and Reese Witherspoon are just a few of their large celebrity following..They’re the true definition of a stylish classic shoe that won’t go out of style and well worth the investment making them a celeb and stylist favorite. These are the types of shoes that need to be in any women’s closet (especially busy moms like me) because they’re easy to wear for day or night, comfy and can be worn year round.  I love the details like the quilting that London Sole is famous for, the dainty little bow and even the heart inside their leather lining.  So glad I got them now because I have tons of shorts both casual and dressy that I plan on pairing them with a la Olivia Palermo.

Check out all of London Sole’s exquisite shoes here and check out all of the London Sole styles that the stars are wearing here.

Angela & Roi Handbags

I don’t know about you but my handbag is a pretty important part of my outfit, and when I pick one it has to have every detail to fit my needs because I wear it all day long and it’s usually filled to the brim!  I was recently sent the Square Dark Orange Tote by Angela & Roi to review and immediately fell in love with the bag AND the company!  It’s a roomy tote that can easily carry an ipad or books and has separate pockets on the outside (essential for people like me that lose everything). It also has a detachable strap making it not only stylish but super functional.   Angela & Roi offer a wide variety of vegan made handbags with a vintage feel that have a luxurious look without the hefty price tag.  Their classic selection of bags and colors make them closet must-haves that will never go out of style.  I also think it’s brilliant how they incorporate charitable endeavors via color. How does the Donate by Color Mission work?  Different medical issues relate to specific colors. For example, Colon Cancer awareness links traditionally with the color blue. When customers purchase a blue handbag, five dollars will automatically be donated to Colon Cancer Alliance.  Check out my tote below and for more info visit – www.AngelaRoi.com
