The Formula: Stripes

The old saying, “if it ain’t broke. don’t fix it,” perfectly describes how I feel about must-have basic pieces in fashion. Trends come and go but basics never go out of style, particularly certain patterns and colors.  To that end I decided to start a series of posts called The Formula to highlight my favorite style “ingredients.”  The most obvious one to start with is stripes and if you follow my posts then it’s obvious by now that I love stripes.  I literally wear the pattern in some shape or form about 3 times a week. Tip: The thinner the stripe the better – keep that in mind when choosing anything with stripes.

Zip It Up!

There’s someting about zippers that instantly give a piece an edgy punk vibe that I just love – especially on pants.  Whether it’s an ankle zip skinny jean or zipper accents you can’t go wrong!  Tip:  let the zippers do most of the work, keep tops and shoes simple, and keep accessories light.  Check out my favorite looks and pants for Yesstyle.

Scoop-Neck Sweater Dress – $108

Zipper Accent Skinny Pants – $45

Peplum Top and Zipper Accent Leggings – $65

Zipper Accent Sweater – $38

Bffcosmetix: b Fun. b Fresh. b Fearless. Just b.

“For every two minutes of glamour, there are eight hours of hard work.”  I happened to see this quote by Jessica SavitchIand and it’s so true – especially in what I do as a fashion blogger and stay at home mom.  While I have all the essentials to quickly pull together a quick look, there’s lots of times where I barely make it out of my house in fold over yoga pants (it’s a huge no-no, I know, but it is what is!).  Here’s the thing:  while I don’t always dress very glamorous I refuse to leave the house without lipgloss and mascara.  Weird?  Sure.  But I think it’s perfectly okay to give yourself a break and wear black yoga pants, a black tank, flip flops, fab lipgloss, mascara and still feel beautiful. Last week I was sent  some makeup samples by Roxanne Alaimo-Esdailes and Mark Cohen, who launched an online venture called bffcosmetix.com. First of all I’m a sucker for cute packaging (which it comes in) and a crafty motto ( “b fun, b fresh, b fearless, just b”). The product line includes lipgloss, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and blush to name a few, and right now they are only charging a $1 promotional price for the lipgloss! I found the colors bold and the quality high.  My favorites were the Red Hottie and Glisten Up but the 7 colors are available for only $6.  Check out the colors below and use coupon code Jblog to receive a free eyeliner with your order.  For more visit www.bffcosmetix.com.

The Stylist Manifesto: First Day Of Class

January 29, 2013 by
Filed under Boys on the Side

If you’ve been following my Instagram lately (@stylstmanifesto) or my blog (despite my sporadic writing schedule), you’ll notice I tend to mix eras. Often this is done by seamlessly blending modern pieces with those of a vintage aesthetic. This ensemble was n exception. The driver’s cap is reminiscent of 1950’s California as are the tie and cardigan. The faint striping of said sweater contrasts the subtle striping of the tie and the almost indistinguishable black ticking of the jacket. For a bit of complication, a multi-check patterned button down peeks from beneath the cardigan and is interrupted by the aforementioned vintage tie. Then I selected Japanese tailored denim by gap with a classic Brando/Dean cuff. Finally, as two complimentary garnishes, I chose the super limited (released 2012 and sold out everywhere) Clot X G-shock Translucent Red watch.  As the blue and red palettes are always complimentary, the choice was obvious. 🙂

Striped Dress For Day & Night

Cooler weather means I get to layer!  My favorite piece to layer, and the easiest one, has always been my army green anorak from Ross (also seen here).  I wear it every chance I get and believe it or not the army green color can be used as a neutral making it super easy to incorporate into many outfits.  This time I decided to pair my anorak with my striped dress for a day time look that I easily dressed up by removing the jacket, adding animal print heels and turning belt around.

Beyonce looked gorgeous at the Presidential Inauguration in a full length Pucci dress and a long black coat topped off with emerald green accessories (Pantone’s color of the year).   Yes the dress was amazing but I personally loved the whole package (including her arm candy Jay Z!).   The coat definitely gave the look a more luxurios feel and the jewelry added the perfect pop of color.  GetBeyonce’s look for less with a more realistic cocktail dress (I don’t know about you but I don’t see the need for a floor length gown in my closet.

New Year New Hairstyle

January 22, 2013 by

I used to get easily bored by my hair style and color.  I’ve had my hair super short (think Drew Barrymore’s Guess ads and Winona Ryder in’ Reality Bites – yeah that short!).  Then I switched to a angled bob, which I actually loved but I was way too lazy to be trimming it every three weeks.  The long layered style I have now is the longest I’ve had a style and I do love it (the color is whole other story).  The ombre style is my favorite and easiest for me but I get bored easily.

Zooey Deschanel  style bangs are so cute and I’m tempted to give bangs a shot. But, to confuse things, I really really love Olivia Palermo‘s hair style just as much.  What to do!  Check out some of inspirations below.
