Top 5 Handbag Trends for 2012

November 19, 2012 by

Forget sugar daddies and designer watches – there’s only one thing you really need on your arm this season, and that’s a trend-hitting handbag. So get ready to cart your life about in style with our guide to the very best choices out there now:

The beauty of a good bag is that it can bring a delicious pop of colour to any outfit, and that’s just what you’ll get when you make a beeline for the latest neon treasures. The best way to rock the look is on a night out; pick a micro handbag and let the colour bring the big attitude.

Look to the future

Silver, shiny, studded and sparkling – the futuristic trend is your chance to have a love affair with all things metallic. Choose bags with unusual shapes and features – padlocks, clear panels, whatever you want goes, as long as it’s got that space-age edge.

If in doubt, oversize it

Oversized beauties by designers like Alexander Wang and Chloé are an indomitable presence in the style world right now, so who cares if your bag is only half full? Throw the biggest one you can find over your shoulder and strut your stuff.

Classic cool

Investing in a classic handbag is always the right move to make, but this season the ladylike glamour of a soft leather number in a timeless barrel shape is just what you need to finish off any look. Don’t be scared to coordinate with gloves and shoes; if you’re going to do the classic look, you may as well do it properly!

The briefcase is back in town

If you don’t want the responsibility of looking too grown up then opt for the briefcase’s cool cousin, the satchel. Henry Holland’s purple checked version, available from the range at Debenhams is perfect, and the print means you’ll be ticking off this season’s huge heritage trend, too.

A Little Layering

Last week I spent some time in my hometown of New York visiting family and enjoying the cool fall weather in cozy sweaters, warm gloves and tons of layers!  From a fashion standpoint the balmy temperature of Florida (where I live full time) definitely limits the options.  Not only do I love to layer, but the holiday’s seem more like a holiday when its cold outside!  Hoping I can make it back to New York soon to see some snow and bundle up!

Macy’s Cyber Monday Deals

Although I still hit the pavement hard with a long list of goodies to buy on Black Friday, it’s mostly out of tradition these days and to be honest the pilgrimage is getting weary (the idea of being a handed a ticket and standing in line at 4 a.m. to buy a TV just doesn’t appeal to me lol).  Truth be told, I’m all about Cyber Monday. Great deals without the long lines!  I logged on to that concept a long time ago.  If you’re the skeptical type that still finds online shopping an overwhelming burden, start by searching your favorite stores – you’ll score amazing deals right from your couch without sacrificing any trust issues. I could rattle off a dozen brick and mortar stores that I love for the very fact that they also provide amazing online deals. Macy’s is the perfect example. Some of my fondest memories growing up in New York revolve around Macy’s (standing in the bitter cold to watch the Thanksgiving parade – it would be hard to separate the holiday spirit from Macy’s!).   This year Macy’s is going all out and early sales start Sunday, November 25 through Monday, November 26.  Get ready to save on apparel, accessories, beauty, jewelry and home must have’s.  For the ladies, big bargains await on tops like shirts and knits, along with cozy coats from the outerwear collection. For guys, find polished and professional pieces like dress shirts, pants and ties, along with more casual clothing like polos and activewear. Shop winter-ready shoes for the whole family with the latest styles of cold-weather footwear. Be sure to look for pumps and flats for women, and dress boots for men. Discover amazing Cyber Monday deals on home favorites like kitchen essentials, bedding, home décor and much more. For beauty mavens, save on designer makeup and fragrances, and even limited edition items from your favorite celebrities. Fulfill holiday wishlists with jewelry, handbags or accessories, and treat yourself to Cyber Monday goodies too!

Channel Your Inner Manhattan Leading Lady with These Fall 2012 Must-Haves

Movies that combine RomCom and fashion speak to the modern woman. Sex and the City remains a style guide for women who insist on a unique, polished look.

Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. How does their fashion influence us? It may have been years since we obsessively recorded every episode. However, their unique style continues to motivate our fashion choices today.

By investing in a few key pieces each season you can attain the flawless look they created. No matter what your personal taste, take cues from these iconic career women.

To replicate the look of Hollywood’s most recent leading ladies, check out the fashion archives of Celebrity Copycat styles.

If you are like us though, and still longing for an evening with Carrie and the girls, check out the imprint their styles still have on fashion today.

Carrie: The Trendy Writer
If Carrie is your ideal style maven then over-the-top accessories are for you. Carrie’s clever style, like many modern women, changes over time depending on where her career takes her.

She often epitomized the peak of runway fashion. However, she was also equally suited in a classic pencil skirt as her career took her from coffee shop column-writing to fashion contributor for Vogue.

Punch up a perfect pencil skirt like this one with a brightly colored blouse, stylish statement necklace and patterned pumps.

Adding a motorcycle jacket adds the edge factor and takes the look from day to evening.

Charlotte: The Polished Art Curator
Charlotte’s classic style was the perfect picture of the modern woman, demure and sleek. Fall 2012 is all about pops of color and mixing textures. But make no mistake, a trusted little black dress is always a key fashion asset.

Look for one with interesting details to put a modern spin on a classic style. This little number from New York & Company tops our list of wear-to-work dresses. The faux leather panel adds interest while the vertical lines provide a powerful slimming effect.

Pair with a bright belt and matching cardigan for a seamless look that can transition from day to evening.

Miranda: The Empowered AttorneyAre you a no-nonsense power dresser like Miranda? Buttoned-up career style does not have to translate to tired pantsuits day after day.

Miranda showed us how to make the most of a clean, professional approach with her timeless take on the modern woman’s suit. Try balancing out perfectly cut, wide leg pants with a bright, jewel-toned blazer such as the green one seen here.

Add a coordinating scarf and forgo the briefcase for a textured bag like this houndstooth laptop bag to magnify your style.

Samantha: The Stunning Publicist
Samantha turned heads wherever she went, all while managing to keep her scorching style.

Take a fashion lesson from this Sex & the City siren and pair fall’s must-have modern faux leather pants with a functional blazer, bold statement necklace and heels with attitude – we love the snakeskin print accent on these pumps!

Lose the blazer after work and go effortlessly from the office to drinks with the girls.

Whether you are off to the coffee shop or the art gallery, the courthouse or the board room, the modern woman needs an individual style that can go all day (and night).

Add your own clever spin on these modern, quality pieces. By doing so, you can create a fall wardrobe worthy of the big screen.

Celeb Style: Recreating Elizabeth Taylor’s Old Hollywood Elegance

November 14, 2012 by
Filed under Fashion Tips & Finds

Lifetime’s much anticipated Liz & Dick debuts November 25 and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy my Thanksgiving time off then to watch a movie about one of Hollywood’s most tumultuous and romantic relationships (If my math is right, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married, divorced, and remarried).  Sure there’s a lot of hype about Lindsay Lohan in the lead role, but what I’m dying to see more then anything is the recreation of Elizabeth Taylor’s over-the-top glamourous style!  Always elegant and dripping in diamonds, her outfits screamed Hollywood elite. For the upcoming holiday season there’s no better time to recreate the old Hollywood elegance epitomized by Liz (for less of course!).  Check out some easy ways to recreate that old Hollywood elegance below:

Rhinestones, diamonds and jewelry with sparkle and glitz instantly give any outfit an elegant and expensive look.  Pair them with jeans and a white button down for a modern/glam vibe.

Red lips and dramatic eyes are a must!  When choosing your lipstick look for colors that complement your skin tone. For warm, tanned skin, go for an orangey red. If you’re pale with rosy undertones, pick a more pinkish red.  If you’re still in doubt try a true red mixed with a lipliner – it will look good on any skin tone – and make sure to balance the bold look with bold lashes and dramatic eyeliner!

Faux fur is a no brainer!  Whether a vest, scarf or coat, you can’t go wrong and it will never go out of style!

A chic sheath dress is an iconic wardrobe staple and one that Elizabeth flaunted many times (sometimes with a tiara – Come on!  How can any woman not swoon over the very idea of wearing a tiara just for the sake of wearing one!).

Lindsay Lohan stars as the legendary dame Elizabeth Taylor alongside Grant Bowler as celebrated actor Richard Burton in the Lifetime Original Movie Liz & Dick, making its world premiere Sunday, November 25, at 9pm ET on Lifetime.  Based on the true story of the couple’s passionate and tumultuous love affair Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were Hollywood royalty and their fiery romance — often called “the marriage of the century” — was the most notorious, publicized and celebrated love affair of its day.

Taking It Back With SnapHats

November 1, 2012 by
Filed under Boys on the Side

As a kid growing up in Brooklyn back in the 90’s, snapback hats were the ultimate urban fashion statement and closely associated with the style and music of hip hop legends like Dr. Dre and Tupac to name a few. The trend of course spread wide from sport legends like Michael Jordan to celebrities such as Will Smith when he was “moving with his auntie and uncle in Bel-air!”   Flash forward to today and my boys are rocking vintage snapbacks and listening to today’s trendsetters like  Kanye West, Mac Miller, Jay-Z and even underground YouTube sensations like D-Pryde and George Watsky.

Yeah, some things in life come full circle and never go out of style! Oh, and if you are wondering the origin of the name snapback, here’s the quick version: it’s a hat with an adjustable strap on the back that snaps together…snapbacks!

The popularity is continuing to grow an many snapbacks today aren’t exclusive to sport teams –  they also use designer brand names like Diamond, Krew and Crook League.  From a fashion standpoint the snapback definitely adds a street vibe to your look whether jeans and a tee shirt or a sports jersey with shorts.  Best of all there are a ton of options and styles to choose from online.  Check out the huge selection at .
